VCP means mean corpuscular volume (MCV, its acronym in English). It is the unit of measurement of the size of red blood cells. Large cell volume is increased if the red blood cells; It will be small cell if the VCP decreases. VCP examine the count is part of a complete blood count. Blood tests are routine matters and are used for checks and diagnostics of some diseases. In addition, they are important for patients with anemia.

Alcoholism or aplastic anemia

Macrocytosis is the disease that produces an excess of red blood cells and can cause chronic liver disease. VCP normal value is between 80 to 95 fl for both sexes. The count that is above 100 or 105 may result from chronic alcoholism, when not showing a folic acid deficiency.

Other conditions that can cause macrocytosis are aplastic anemia, a condition caused by lack of production of red blood cells, and bazotomía, which is the removal of the spleen.

Megaloblástica non macrocitosis is another related to the size of red blood cells disease, which are enlarged but not due to a deficiency of folic acid or vitamin B12. Examining this condition is transversely check the bone marrow for myelodysplasia or any other advanced condition affecting the liver.

Vitamin B12 deficiency by

Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause macrocytosis, which is present in pernicious anemia. She can be found in meat, fish and milk and its deficiency is caused by a lack of absorption in the digestive tract. Low levels are frequent in elderly with a small amount of hydrochloric acid, but also can be found in coeliacs, those with Crohn's disease, patients with pernicious anemia, gastrointestinal problems and vegetarian surgeries.

Folic acid deficiency

Folic acid deficiency can occur when there is a lack of red blood cells, causing macrocytosis. It is present in green leafy vegetables and liver. The body is unable to store and need to continually resupply through a balanced diet. Folic acid deficiency can also be a result of alcoholism, some medications such as Dilantin and barbiturates, celiac disease, Crohn's disease and gastrointestinal surgeries.

Symptoms and Treatment

People who suffer from anemia macrocytosis feel fatigue, mouth and acidic tongue, headaches, pallor, numbness, tingling, muscle dysfunction and dementia.

Treatments include vitamin B12 and folic acid while if there is any drug that causes the disease has to be removed.

Folic acid deficiency in pregnant can cause spina bifida in newborns, a condition in which the spinal cord could not close properly. The disease can cause paralysis and brain problems.

Other complications that are consistent with both deficiencies of vitamin B12 and folic acid are gray and loops, infertility, increased pigmentation of the skin and heart failure in people with heart problems.
