No need to avoid eating cheeses during your pregnancy. Cheese is rich in protein, calcium and B vitamins, all of which are excellent nutrients for mom and baby. However, the cheese can be dangerous for pregnant women if made with unpasteurized milk. Cheeses manufactured with "raw milk"Sometimes they have potentially harmful bacteria such as listeria, which pregnant women are particularly susceptible. BabyCenter recommends ensure that any cheese you consume during pregnancy is pasteurized and, if in doubt, avoid it.

Hard cheeses are those who have a long maturation process, usually a few years, and are characterized by their firm and crystalline texture. Almost all hard cheeses are made from pasteurized or cooked at high temperatures which kill bacteria, to better separate the curd from the whey milk. For this reason, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, consider that hard cheeses are generally safe for pregnant women. Popular forms of hard cheeses include cheddar, edam, emmental, gouda, gruyere, Havarti, Jarlsberg, lancashire, Manchego, Parmesan and provolone.

Soft cheeses are those which have a flexible texture sometimes feels sticky, liquid or aqueous. Many pregnant women believe they should avoid all soft cheeses during pregnancy, however, this is not true. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) insists that unpasteurized soft cheeses are perfectly safe for pregnant women. Here, also known as the semi-soft cheeses, including Brie, Camembert, cottage cheese, cream cheese, feta cheese, mascarpone, mozzarella, ricotta, goat cheese (bark) and quark.

Processed cheeses are a food product based on modified natural cheeses. Unlike natural cheese, processed cheese is made with salt emulsifiers, stabilizers and other additives which make the product in a homogenous, pliable dough. As always processed cheese is subjected to a heating process, it is considered safe for pregnant women. However, although safe, it is not necessarily healthy. Processed cheese has a much higher content than natural cheese sodium, which could spell trouble if you have high blood pressure or heart problems. What examples they include processed cheese American cheese, Velveeta and Cheez Whiz.
