No need to avoid eating cheeses during your pregnancy. Cheese is rich in protein, calcium and B vitamins, all of which are excellent nutrients for mom and baby. However, the cheese can be dangerous for pregnant women if made with unpasteurized milk. Cheeses manufactured with "raw milk"Sometimes they have potentially harmful bacteria such as listeria, which pregnant women are particularly susceptible. Hard cheeses are those who have a long maturation process, usually a few years, and are characterized by their firm and crystalline texture. Almost all hard cheeses are made from pasteurized or cooked at high temperatures which kill bacteria, to better separate the curd from the whey milk. For this reason, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, consider that hard cheeses are generally safe for pregnant women. Popular forms of hard cheeses include cheddar, edam, emmental, gouda, gruyere, Havarti, Jarlsberg, lancashire, Manchego, Parmesan and provolone.

Many pregnant women believe they should avoid all soft cheeses during pregnancy, however, this is not true. Here, also known as the semi-soft cheeses, including Brie, Camembert, cottage cheese, cream cheese, feta cheese, mascarpone, mozzarella, ricotta, goat cheese (bark) and quark.
